Two Week Check-Up

For most babies, the 'two week check-up' would probably be considered their first doctor's appointment. Considering Henry was continuously monitored every day of his first week of life, I'd say a visit to his new pediatrician was all old hat for him. He was certainly very chill during all the checks of his vital signs (everything looked great, including oxygenation at 100). 

At home, when we change his diaper or his clothes, it is like the world is ending and he is calling for anyone, ANYONE to come help save him from the monsters that are his parents. 

At the doctor, it was like naked time was sunbathing at the beach time.

Overall, Henry is doing fantastically. His incision healing beautifully (we will go back to Madison next week for removal of stitches) and he is doing all the 'right' baby things: eating, sleeping, pooping. (Had to change his diaper twice while we were there in fact.)

I would give anything for him to sleep longer than an hour in his bassinet, but at least we have been assured that his tendency to roll on to his side is not a cause for concern at this age and point in his development.

'Tummy time' has happened just once successfully on his play mat, but he LOVES to snuggle up tummy to chest right now, and he is very keen to lift and move his head. (Check that off the developmental milestone list.)

Because of the many changes in fluid levels in his system during his first week of life thanks to surgery, it was difficult for the pediatrician to ascertain just how much weight he has gained. His weight today was 7 lbs. 9 oz., which is definitely up from birth (hooray!) but it is hard to determine his average daily weight gain. No cause for concern, since he is feeding regularly every 2-3 hours and seems to be getting enough to eat (gulping loud enough with satisfaction to be heard across the room), but we will go back for a weight check in a couple of weeks just to be sure.

The big win for Mama today was getting Henry in and out of the car in his car seat independently. (Yes, I did request a car seat/stroller system that requires multiple user guides.) Thankfully, although Eric was down for the count because of his second COVID vaccine, I had my mom on hand to help carry him to and from the appointment, and also soothe him when he inevitably got cranky at the end, when home (and second lunch) seemed very far away.... 😏
